2013

• Sebastiaan Van Leuven, Hari Kalva, Glenn Van Wallendael, Jan De Cock, en Rik Van de Walle winnen 'Special Merit for Outstanding Paper Award': On January, 14th Sebastiaan Van Leuven, Hari Kalva, Glenn Van Wallendael, Jan De Cock, and Rik Van de Walle received the Special Merit for Outstanding Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics for their paper entitled: Joint complexity and rate optimization for 3DTV depth map encoding. This work is the result of a collaboration between Multimedia Lab (Ghent University – ELIS – iMinds) and Florida Atlantic University, in the scope of on-going 3D video standardization efforts.

• Best Reviewer Award 23rd International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing and Systems: Prof. Erik D'Hollander won the Best Reviewer Award on the 23rd International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing and Systems (december 2011, USA)
• SPEC Distinguished Dissertation Award 2011: Luk Van Ertvelde won the SPEC Distinguished Dissertation Award 2011. He received the award in Boston on the ICPE conference. http://research.spec.org/awards.html
• 8th International Symposium on Noninvasive Functional Source Imaging of the Brain and Hear:  Pieter van Mierlo won the second price on the "8th International Symposium on Noninvasive Functional Source Imaging of the Brain and Heart" with his paper "Epileptic brain network from scalp EEG" (promotor: prof. dr. ir. Steven Staelens). He received the price from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Alberta, Canada. Pieter van Mierlo works for the research group MEDISIP of the department of Electronics and Information Systems.

• Mimics Innovation Award: Bert Vandeghinste won with his master thesis "Replacing Vascular Corrosion Casting by Micro-CT Imaging for Building 3D Cardiovascular Models in Mice" (promotors: prof. dr. ir. Patrick Segers and prof. dr. Stefaan Vandenberghe) the Mimics Innovation Award 2011 in the open category. He received the price from the company Materialise. 

2010

• Best paper award Multimedia Communications Conference 2010: On the International Mobile Multimedia Communications Conference 2010 (Lissabon, Portugal) Glenn Van Wallendael, Sebastiaan Van Leuven, Jan De Cock, Peter Lambert and Rik Van de Walle (all IR06) received the Best Paper Award for their article “Fast H.264/AVC-to-SVC Transcoding in a Mobile Television Environment”.
• Best Poster Presentation Award International Electrokinetics Conference: Filip Beunis, postdoc in the ‘Liquid Crystals and Photonics’ group at department ELIS, together with co-authors Filip Strubbe, Bart Verboven, Kristiaan Neyts en Dmitri Petrov, has won the ‘Best Poster Presentation Award’ at the ‘9th International Electrokinetics Conference (ELKIN 2010)’, which took place from June 6 to 10, 2010 in Turku (Finland). The winning work ‘Monitoring of charging events on particles in a nonpolar liquid’ is a collaboration between UGent and the ‘Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO)’ in Barcelona (Spain) and reports experiments, reminiscent of Millikan’s famous oil-drop experiment, in which changes of only one electron charge on a colloidal particle are monitored during a long time.
• Lieven Eeckhout Laureate KVAB : Prof. Dr. L. Eeckhout was proclaimed Laureate of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten (KVAB) on December 11th. The title Laureate is the highest award the Academy yearly presents as a recognition of a creditable academic career until the age of 40 years. Prof. Eeckhout was proclaimed Laureate in the Category of the Technical Sciences.
  His research interests focuses on computer architecture and the hardware/ software interface in general, and performance modeling and analysis, simulation methodology and workload characterization in particular. He received two IEEE Micro Top Picks Awards and wrote a synthesis lecture on “Computer Architecture Performance Evaluation Methods”. He also participates in the ExaScience Lab, part of Intel Labs Europe, focusing on architectural simulation techniques for exascale systems.

2009

• Roblat medal: Prof. Steven Staelens (IBBT-Medisip) & Prof. Rik Van de Walle (IBBT-MMLab) can be proud of a joint victory winning the Robtlat medal. This medal honors the A1-article with the highest rate of quotes of the last 5 years in ‘Physics in Medicine and Biology’. It concerns an article of 2004: ‘'Gate: a simulation toolkit for PET and SPECT' of which both professors were co-author and which describes a simulation platform of molecular imaging. According to the ISI database, 178 references were made to this article. Congratulations Steven and Rik!

2008

• Baudouin Elleboudt Award: Pieter Buteneers wint met zijn eindwerk "De detectie van epileptische aanvallen met Reservoir Computing" (Promotoren prof. dr. ir. Dirk Stroobandt, prof. dr. ir. Jan Van Campenhout) een Baudouin Elleboudt Award.
• BARCO-prijs voor afstudeerwerken: Ir. Sebastiaan Van Leuven van de vakgroep ELIS ontving op 23 oktober 2008 de BARCO-prijs voor afstudeerwerken, voor zijn scriptie ‘Ontwikkeling van een tool voor de analyse van schaalbaar gecodeerde videostromen’ (promotor: prof. Rik Van de Walle). Deze prijs werd hem toegekend door het FWO-Vlaanderen.
• Prijs jonge onderzoekers op International Conference on Electroluminescence: Saso Mladenovski (doctoraatsstudent aan de vakgroep Elektronica en Informatiesystemen bij prof. Kristiaan Neyts) heeft de prijs voor jonge onderzoekers gewonnen op de International Conference on Electroluminescence (EL2008, Rome, Italië). Hij heeft deze prijs gekregen voor zijn presentatie “OLED light outcoupling enhancement by Nelder-Mead layer thickness optimization”. Zijn werk handelt over het verbeteren van lichtuitkoppeling in organische licht-emitterende diodes (OLEDs) door het optimaliseren van de laagdiktes. Het onderzoek werd verricht in het kader van het Europese Integrated Project OLLA in samenwerking met Prof. Kristiaan Neyts (ELIS), Peter Vandersteegen, Prof. Peter Bienstman (INTEC), Georg Gaertner en Volker van Elsbergen (Philips Research Europe Laboratories, Aachen, Germany). In dit project worden OLEDs ontwikkeld met zeer hoge efficiëntie voor verlichting en de OLEDs zullen mogelijks binnen enkele jaren een alternatief worden voor de huidige verlichtingstechnieken.
• Best talk award op 8th International Electrokinetics Conference: Filip Strubbe (doctorandus bij ELIS met promoter Kristiaan Neyts) heeft in Santa Fe, New Mexico, de Best Talk award ontvangen voor zijn presentatie op de 8th International Electrokinetics Conference (ELKIN2008). De ELIS onderzoeker presenteerde op de conferentie resultaten waarbij voor het eerst elementaire ladingen op colloidale deeltjes kunnen gemeten worden. Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd in de onderzoeksgroep Vloeibare Kristallen en Fotonica, in samenwerking met Filip Beunis en Bart Verboven, onder begeleiding van Prof. Kristiaan Neyts, en is gefinancierd door het IWT-Vlaanderen.
  Zijn onderzoek heeft geleid tot een patentaanvraag en een publicatie in het prestigieuze tijdschrift Physical Review Letters: "Detection of elementary charges on colloidal particles" (Filip Strubbe, Filip Beunis, Kristiaan Neyts), met de vermelding "editor's suggestion".

• Cadence Design Award: IGBT motorsturingschip van J. Missinne en R. Verplancke (CMST) bekroond (Munchen - 29 april 2008). Jeroen Missinne en Rik Verplancke hebben de tweede plaats veroverd in de Cadence "European Electronic Design Contest for Students". De prijsuitreiking vond plaats gedurende de derde editie van de CDNLive! EMEA conference in Munchen.
  De jonge ELIS onderzoekers, beiden actief in het Centrum voor Microsysteemtechnologie (CMST), kregen de prijs voor het ontwerp van een volledig geïntegreerde, pulsbreedte-modulatie gedreven, H-brug met IGBTs voor de snelheidscontrole van DC motoren. Dit ontwerp werd gemaakt onder de supervisie van Prof. Jan Doutreloigne.

• “Best paper award” op “6th international Symposium of Non-invasive Functional Source Imaging & International Conference of Functional Biomedical Imaging”: Hans Hallez ontving op het “6th international Symposium of Non-invasive Functional Source Imaging & International Conference of Functional Biomedical Imaging” (NFSI & ICFBI) in Hangzhou, China, de tweede prijs van de “best paper award”. Hij kreeg de prijs voor zijn paper “Dipole estimation errors due to not neglecting anisotropic conductivities of white matter in EEG source estimation".
• “EANM 2007 Marie Curie Young Investigator grant”: Op de European Association of Nuclear medicine meeting in Kopenhagen heeft Stefaan Vandenberghe de “EANM 2007 Marie Curie Young Investigator grant” ontvangen voor zijn presentatie “Impact of Time-of-Flight on reconstruction performance and image quality".
• “Best talk award” op “Imaging Technologies for Biomedical Sciences Conference” : Mahir Ozdemir heeft de “best talk award” gewonnen op de “Imaging Technologies for Biomedical Sciences Conference” in Milos, Griekenland. De onderzoeker kreeg de onderscheiding voor zijn presentatie "Quantitative Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy without Water Suppression".
• FWO/Barco-thesisprijzen 2007: Op dinsdag 11 december werden in Kuurne de jaarlijkse FWO/Barco-thesisprijzen uitgereikt. Hierbij vielen 2 eindwerken van ELIS-signatuur in de prijzen: het eindwerk van Simon Kluyskens 'Hardware-versnelde bewegingscompensatie in het wavelet-domein voor ultiem schaalbare video' (promotor Dirk Stroobandt) en dat van Pieter Vanbrabant 'Modellering van het statisch en (hydro)dynamisch schakelgedrag van LCD's behorende tot de "brede kijkhoek"-klasse' (promotor Kristiaan Neyts).
  Ze werden elk bekroond met een FWO/Barco thesisprijs ter waarde van 2500 euro. Hieronder kan u het persbericht downloaden.
• IEEE Top Picks in computer architecture: Het werk "A top-down approach to architecting CPI component performance counters" door Stijn Eyerman, Lieven Eeckhout, Tejas Karkhanis en James E. Smith werd bekroond als één van de Top Picks in computer architecture. Deze prestigieuze erkenning gaat uit van het IEEE-tijdschrift voor chip en silicium systeem ontwerpers "IEEE Micro" en wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt.

• Barcoprijzen 2006: Onze vakgroep viel dit jaar tweemaal in de prijzen, met laureaten Tom Bert en Hans Dierckx. Dr. Tom Bert won de jaarlijkse Wetenschappelijke Prijs Barco/FWO voor zijn doctoraatswerk "Karakterisering en modellering van elektroforetische beeldschermen" (Promotor: Prof. H. De Smet). Deze prijs bedraagt 5'000 Euro. Ir. Hans Dierckx won één van de drie jaarlijkse Barco/FWO-Prijzen voor zijn afstudeerwerk "Hoge hoekresolutie-vezeltractografie van de witte hersenmaterie met behulp van diffusiegewogen magnetische resonantie-beeldvorming" (Promotor: Prof. Y. • Computer and Instrumentation Young Investigator Award: Ir. Stefaan Vandenberghe heeft de tweede prijs in het Computer and Instrumentation Young Investigator Award Symposium van de Annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine ontvangen. Hij ontving de onderscheiding voor zijn presentatie "Influence of TOF resolution on object dependant convergence in iterative reconstruction". Ir. Stefaan Vandenberghe is als onderzoeker verbonden aan de vakgroep Elektronica en Informatiesystemen van de faculteit Ingenieurswetenschappen. Info: Ir. • ICF-prijs Andreas De Leenheer: Steven Staelens werd laureaat voor zijn doctoraat 'Monte Carlo Simulations for System Modeling in Emission Tomography (Promotoren: prof. I. Lemahieu en prof. R. Van de Walle).
• ISO Award for Outstanding Technical Contributions: Dr.ir. Frederik De Keukelaere en prof. R. Van de Walle ontvingen een 'ISO Award for Outstanding Technical Contributions'. Ze werden voorgedragen vanuit het MPEG-comité voor hun bijdragen tot MPEG-21 Digital Item Processing en MPEG-21 Reference Software standaarden.
• Mid-Europe Chapter Student Award 2006: Op de Society for Information Displays - Mid Europe Chapter heeft Tom Bert de Mid-Europe Chapter Student Award 2006 gewonnen 'for his outstanding work in the field of model for the properties and behaviour of electronic paper '.
• Featured article in 'Physics in Medicine and Biology': Het tijdschrift 'Physics in Medicine and Biology' heeft uit een 40-tal inzendingen een paper van Stefaan Vandenberghe geselecteerd als featured article. De paper is ontstaan uit een samenwerking met Philips Research USA en University of Pennsylvania, en behandelt een nieuw type scanner die een sterke verbetering in beeldkwaliteit kan bekomen. Deze samenwerking heeft geleid tot de eerste commerciële scanner van dit type.
• Wetenschappelijke Prijs Barco/FWO: De wetenschappelijke Prijs Barco/FWO, ter waarde van 5000 EUR, ging naar Steven Staelens voor zijn werk 'Monte-Carlomodel met klinische impact op de optimalisatie van nucleaire medische SPECT-beeldvorming '.
• Student Competition Advanced Technology Workshop on Thermal Management: Bjorn Vermeersch is een van de winnaars van de Student Competition op de Advanced Technology Workshop on Thermal Management van IMAPS, met zijn bijdrage 'Influence of Thermal Contact Resistance on Thermal Impedance of Microelectronic Structures '.
