Toon Brans has won the IE award in the category Energy, Climate Environment and Nature for his dissertation 'Switchable diffractive structures in Smart Energy Glass' (supervisors : prof. dr. ir. Jeroen Beeckman (ELIS), dr. ir. Casper van Oosten (Peer+). 

The award was presented by the Koninklijke Vlaamse Ingenieursvereniging.

 

The dissertation concerns a new kind of glass by which the user himself can determine the transmission of light. By doing so, one can take measures to save energy on lighting and air conditioning in a building. In addition, the glass itself generates electricity, and in the long run the costs are covered.
