Accurate quantification of mitral regurgitation (MR) is still a challenging task in clinical cardiology. In order to develop and refine new algorithms for estimating the severity of MR by means of real-time 3D Doppler echocardiography (RT3DE), an experimental and numerical flow model have been developed. Using CAD and Rapid Prototyping Machining (RPM) technology, a hydraulic in vitro model is designed and constructed, for flow analysis with Doppler echocardiography and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The local flow field near the heart valve leakage is analysed using 2D Doppler echocardiography, a standard 2D PIV system and a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. Preliminary CFD results compare well with the experimentally measured PIV and 2D echo velocity field, both in the upstream converging region and downstream the turbulent jet zone.
