History

Many research groups of ELIS have their roots in the "Physical Electronics" group founded by Prof. Herman Pauwels, which retired in 2003. The first activity of the "Physical Electronics" group was "thin-film transistors", which led to the TFCG Microsystems Group. Later "solar cells" were added, leading to the Solar Cells group. During the 80's the display activities ("Liquid Crystals" and "Electroluminescence") were started.

BEOC started life as an umbrella for the "Liquid Crystals Display" group and the "Electroluminescence" group. After the retirement of Prof. Herman Pauwels the "Liquid Crystals Display" group continued life as the "Liquid Crystal and Photonics" group and the "Electroluminescence" group as the BEOC-group.
